Library users are accountable for items borrowed on their ID cards. Books required for teaching purposes may be borrowed by faculty as a departmental loan for one semester. This privilege is restricted to GUST faculty.

Returns and Fines

Books should be returned to the circulation desk on or before the due date. Failure to return books on time will result in a fine. An overdue book will automatically block a user from borrowing other Library items. The Library will send users two overdue notices. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not exempt a borrower from a fine.

Fines and Penalties

1. Overdue Fine

Students are charged a fine of 100 Fils per day, per book (up to a maximum of 15 days) unless the book is returned within the 3-day grace period.

2. Damaged or Lost Items

If a user loses an item, they will be charged the replacement cost of the item, a KD 10/- processing fee and any overdue fines that apply.

Reserve Materials

Faculty can place items on reserve (books and articles) in the Library. The reserve system allows limited materials to receive maximum use by students for a particular class.

  • Users must present their University ID cards at the circulation desk. One item per user may be checked-out at one time.
  • Reserve materials are due two hours from the time of check-out. Items for overnight loan may be checked-out between 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. and must be returned the following day at 8:00 a.m.
  • Users have to return reserve items to the circulation desk. Items returned to any other location will not be counted as returned until they are back in reserve. Users are responsible for returning any reserve item they take to the copy center.
  • The heavy demand for items placed on Reserve requires a strict overdue policy. No one is exempt or excused from overdue fines.
  • Late return
    • 250 Fils per hour / KD 1/- per day.
  • Lost items
    • If a user loses an item, they will be charged the replacement cost of the item, a KD 10/- processing fee and any overdue fines that apply.
    • The Library will consider a reserve item "LOST" if it is overdue for more than 15 working days.

Audiovisual Circulation

Audiovisual materials may be checked-out to current GUST faculty, staff, and students.
The loan period is 5 days for faculty and 3 days for staff and students. A maximum of 3 audiovisual items for faculty and staff and 1 audiovisual item for students may be checked-out.

  • CDs and DVDs are for Library use only.
  • All audiovisual items must be returned in person to the Library circulation desk.
  • Overdue items are subject to a fine of KD 1/- per day.
  • Lost Items
    • If a user loses an item, they will be charged the replacement cost of the item, a KD 10/- processing fee and any overdue fines that apply.

Non-Circulating Materials

Normally non-circulating materials cannot be taken out of the Library. However, in case of a pressing need, such materials may be checked out by a faculty member for a few hours or overnight.

Recalls and Renewals

All Library materials are subject to recall when another user places a hold (request) on the material(s). The original user will then have three days from the date of notice to return the recalled items regardless of the original due date.  Failing to return a recalled item after the three day period may result in incurring lost book charges, as well as late fees. Items on hold are checked-out on a first-come-first-served basis and cannot be recalled.

Renewals may be made in person at the circulation desk or online via the Library online catalog. Items may be renewed up to two times online. After the second renewal, users must renew items in person at the Library's circulation desk.

Community Users Membership Policy

Users not affiliated with GUST may utilize Library services by obtaining a Library membership. To become a member, the applicant must fill out a form and submit it at the circulation desk along with a copy of their Civil ID, two passport size photos, and a refundable deposit of Kd 50/- only. more......
